Balagot -- History of Russia and setting the stage for Communism : The Russian Empire came into being after being shaped by Mongol invasions, the collapse of the Byzantine Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. Alliances among the neighbouring Slavic were made, broken, and modified according to the whims of other meddling nations. But the Russian Empire developed its own personality, led by strong leaders such as Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, and the Romanov Dynasty. The Empire went into steep decline after the Napoleonic invasion, political and familial infighting, and ended after the Romanovs were deposed. This period also was witness to the Great War and the rise of Communism. Each chapter has a first person quote from someone present at the happening. Sadly, there are no maps or photographs to enliven the proceedings, but this is a fascinating read, nonetheless. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2021 )

It tells of the many wars they were involved in as the earth’s largest country. It was not easy trying to rule so many varied cultures, even when you believed you had a divine right to do so and were the successor to the Byzantine Empire. Read how the physical and mental abilities of the Tsars led to court intrigue and politics; many rulers serving as head of state for only a relatively short time. There is a short section on how the Romanovs contributed to their own demise with the Russian Civil War and subsequent Communist take-over in 1917 and its initial effects on Russia and the World. Some of the interesting information mentioned in this book include the following information: Russia rose from obscurity to be a huge empire. After the Tsarist Russia was overthrown, some Russian people turned a blind eye toward some of the Communist atrocities. Even under some harsh conditions, there was some type of equality that could not be found in Tsarist Russia. Tsarist Russia collapsed because of its own unequal foundation. It provides a global perspective on the development of the Euroasian continent and how difficult it is to shift geopolitical culture without discipline and foresight. In particular with the Russian Empire this text highlights how westernization ultimately spelled the decline of the Empire at its onset due to poor management and relations between leadership and the populous over centuries. The forced russification of the empire, alongside the lack of "a firm hand at home, peace abroad, and a strong economy" aided the development of the Bolshevik Revolution.
